Summer camp

From Wikimon

In Digimon Adventure, the seven Chosen Children attend a summer camp (サマーキャンプ Samā kyanpu). During the camp, they are unexpectedly taken into the Digital World.

Overview[edit]

Setting[edit]

The novelization of Digimon Adventure identifies the site of the summer camp as Mikami Canyon 「御神渓谷」.[1] The camp grounds are mountainous and forested. Facilities on the grounds include a parking lot for buses, and a hokora at the top of a hill.

The camp grounds are also the location of a gate to the Digital World. When this gate is open, it manifests as an aurora and a wormhole, and when it is taking people into the Digital World, what appears to be a wall of water erupts from the ground.[2]

Digimon Adventure[edit]

The summer camp grounds' gate prepares to take the Chosen Children into the Digital World.

In the summer of 1999, Odaiba Elementary School holds a summer camp for its students, including Yagami Taichi, Ishida Yamato, Takenouchi Sora, Izumi Kōshirō, Tachikawa Mimi, and Kido Jo.[2] Yamato's brother, Takaishi Takeru, also attends the camp despite being from a different school, so that they can spend their summer vacation together.[4] Taichi's sister, Yagami Hikari, was also supposed to attend, but was unable to due to a cold.[3]

Despite being made a camp group leader,[3] Jo never originally wanted to attend summer camp, and would have rather stayed home and studied.[5] Mimi, on the other hand, came to the camp excessively prepared with a bag of camping gear which she took from her father.[4]

On August 1, 1999, within half a day of their arrival,[6] the summer camp is disrupted by a sudden freak blizzard, as part of a recent global pattern of bizarre weather disturbances. The blizzard separates Taichi, Yamato, Takeru, Sora, Kōshirō, Mimi and Jo from the rest of the group and from all of the chaperons, and they take shelter in the hokora until it passes. By the time that they emerge, the gate to the Digital World has opened, and their Digivices are sent to them through its wormhole. Once they take their Digivices, the gate takes them into the Digital World.[2]

When Taichi and Koromon are inadvertently sent back to the Real World, circa August 1, following their battle with Etemon, Taichi attempts to contact the other Chosen Children to see whether they had been sent back as well. As far as their families know, however, they are still at the summer camp; Taichi claims that he left the camp early to explain how he is able to call.[7]

When Taichi, Yamato, Takeru, Sora, Kōshirō, Mimi and Jo return to the Real World to pursue Vamdemon, they awaken on the campgrounds outside the hokora, the same place they had been when they entered the Digital World.[8] Barely any time has passed at all in the Real World in their absence, and at the time that they return, the camp has been canceled due to the blizzard, and the other children and staff are packing up and loading the buses to go home. Fujiyama Ichirou comes looking for them and assumes that they have been slacking off from packing up; when he asks about the partner Digimon, Taichi makes up a story about how they are plush toys that the group found in a very remote and unknown part of the mountains near the camping grounds.[3]

As the buses prepare to depart from the camp site, Yamato and Takeru make up a sob story to convince Fujiyama to drop the group off in Hikarigaoka, so that they can take advantage of the camp buses to speed up their search for the eighth Chosen Child.[3]

When Kōshirō gets home, his parents notice that his personality has changed drastically since he left for summer camp, which baffles Izumi Kae given how brief the trip was (as far as they know).[6]

Digimon Adventure 02[edit]

On December 31, 2002, while Motomiya Daisuke's group of Chosen Children are fighting Belial Vamdemon in the Digital World, Taichi, Yamato, Koshiro, Sora and Jo plan to go to the Digital World to reinforce them. Since the Hikarigaoka gate had previously been sealed by Black War Greymon, the gate at the summer camp site is the next closest of which they are aware, so they travel back to the site, accompanied by Kawada Noriko, her family, and many of the Japanese Chosen Children's family members. At first, the gate does not respond at all to Taichi's attempts to open it, but when the mass reaction of gates all around the Real World is triggered, it opens as well, and the five Chosen Children and Noriko enter.[9]

Digimon Adventure[edit]

As a novelization of the Digimon Adventure anime series, the summer camp plays the same role. However, the series adds, clarifies and expands upon numerous details about the camping trip, including that:

  • Fujiyama Ichirou was the summer camp's organizer.[1]
  • Although she was supposed to attend the camp, Yagami Hikari had become sick the day before she would have departed for it. Yagami Taichi suspects that the illness may have been connected to a strange, dazed reaction that she had to seeing Digimon appear in a news bulletin about the freak weather events, and that he had caused her condition to deteriorate by bringing her out to shop for camp supplies anyway.[1]
  • Takaishi Takeru received special permission from Fujiyama to attend the camp despite being from a different school; this had been Takeru's idea, as he had seen the camp marked on Ishida Hiroaki's calendar and wanted to go with Ishida Yamato.[1]
  • The only reason that Izumi Kōshirō attended the camp in the first place was that Taichi had invited him.[1]
  • The camp is divided into groups led by individual students, including Kido Jo's "Kido Group." Tachikawa Mimi is assigned to the Kido Group, while Taichi and Takenouchi Sora are assigned to different groups from each other.[1]

Super Evolution Stage "Digimon Adventure tri. ~Adventure of August 1~"[edit]

Inside an illusion, Izumi Kōshirō, Takenouchi Sora, and Tachikawa Mimi organize a commemorative camping trip for the eight Chosen Children, on the same grounds where the summer camp was held on August 1, 2005, its sixth anniversary. Yagami Taichi in particular views the trip as an opportunity to recapture his carefree childhood.

Once they arrive at (what they believe to be) the camp grounds, Kido Jo leaves early for an exam. The others quickly begin to notice that something is not right and that, among other obvious bizarre details, the grounds are suspiciously empty other than themselves and a strangely familiar groundskeeper, and there are already conveniently placed tents. In fact, they have become trapped in a digital space masquerading as the camp grounds, created by Etemon as part of a revenge plot.

Once Omegamon defeats Etemon and breaks the Chosen Children out of the digital space, they discover that all of this had been an illusion in the first place and that, the entire time, they had been on their expedition into the Digital World searching for Mochizuki Meiko and Meicoomon.
